What Is a Thread Lift?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive facelifting technique that can help reposition facial tissues that have begun to grow lax or droop with age. Dr. Sohrab’s preferred approach, the Silhouette InstaLift, is an FDA-approved nonsurgical method to lift the cheeks and jowls. A thread lift procedure has minimal downtime with quicker recovery than a surgical facelift.

How a Minimally Invasive Facelift Works

  • Delicate, self-anchoring sutures are used to reposition the facial structures, which can shift over time as part of the aging process.

  • The sutures are composed of absorbable threads and cones made from poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA). This unique material has a biostimulatory effect that leads to the placement of new collagen. This new collagen supports the lifting of the soft tissue and skin in the face.

  • Unlike a classic surgical facelift, which primarily addresses skin laxity, the Silhouette InstaLift provides both skin tightening and repositioning of volume in the face. The treatment can lead to softening of the nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

What Is a Thread Lift Procedure Like?

A Silhouette InstaLift takes under an hour and is performed in the office with only local anesthetic. The areas of lifting are demarcated prior to the procedure to focus on areas of concern in the mid and lower face. Risks are minimal, especially when your thread lift is performed by an experienced, board-certified specialist. Patients can drive themselves to and from the procedure, as sedation is not required for the procedure.

Thread Lift FAQs

The Silhouette InstaLift is an optimal procedure for anyone interested in refreshing their appearance by addressing midface sagging and jowling without the downtime of a surgical facelift, which is major surgery. The procedure is:

  • Safe (FDA-approved)
  • Provides instant results that continue to improve due to the biostimulatory effect of the sutures
  • Has minimal downtime
  • Is comfortable enough to be performed under local anesthesia alone

Together, these make a thread lift ideal for a broad range of patients and age ranges. You can start with a personal consultation with Dr. Sohrab. She will go over your concerns and provide detailed recommendations on available options.

Unlike incisional surgical facelifts, a thread lift has minimal downtime and recovery. You can often return to work or social activities within a day. There may be swelling, redness, or bruising immediately after the procedure. However, it tends to remain mild and should not interfere with most of your routine. Otherwise, patients generally need no follow-up visits. You can simply head out from the office and begin enjoying your results.

You will need to avoid heavy activity and pressure on the face for 2 weeks. Any extra strain can interfere with the bruising and swelling going down. You will need to maintain a light diet without aggressive chewing so as to ensure the sutures remain anchored to achieve optimal results.

Patients can expect about 1 to 3 years of optimal results following their thread lift. This means the treatment lasts longer than fillers but shorter than surgical techniques. The duration of your minimally invasive facelift will depend on factors like age and lifestyle. Patients can promote longer-lasting results by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including:

  • Minimizing excess sun exposure (and wearing UV protective sunscreen outdoors)
  • Staying hydrated and avoiding excess alcohol
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Maintaining a good skin care regimen

Though a thread lift can last for years, it is still temporary. The good news is that you can repeat the treatment when your results begin to fade. We usually recommend waiting until the previous threads have dissolved enough to allow a repeat treatment.

Dr. Sohrab’s approach to a thread lift, the Silhouette InstaLift, was FDA-approved in April of 2015. For over a decade, patients have been using this treatment to renew their facial aesthetic safely and effectively. The sutures are composed of PLGA, which has been used for many years due to its ability to absorb safely and naturally in the body. The products we use for the treatment are all manufactured in the United States.
